Vat Savitri
Vrat Katha is a popular Hindu religious story associated with the observance of
the Vat Savitri Vrat. The Vat Savitri Vrat is a fasting ritual observed by
married women in India, particularly in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and
some parts of North India. It is observed on the Amavasya (new moon day) of the
Jyeshtha month, which usually falls in May or June.
The Vat
Savitri Vrat Katha revolves around the devoted wife Savitri and her
determination to save her husband's life from the clutches of Yama, the god of
death. The story goes as follows:
Long ago, a
king named Ashwapati had a daughter named Savitri. Savitri was beautiful,
virtuous, and deeply devoted to her husband, Satyavan. However, Savitri was
informed by the sage Narada that her husband had only one year left to live.
On the
predicted day, Savitri and Satyavan went to the forest, where Satyavan suddenly
collapsed due to a severe headache. At that moment, Yama appeared to claim
Satyavan's soul. Savitri pleaded with Yama to spare her husband's life. Yama
refused her requests, but Savitri persisted and followed Yama as he took away
her husband's soul.
Savitri's
unwavering devotion and determination moved Yama. Impressed by her devotion,
Yama offered her a boon. Savitri cleverly asked for her father-in-law's
eyesight and kingdom to be restored, which Yama granted. However, Savitri
insisted that her husband's life be restored as well. Eventually, Yama had no
choice but to revive Satyavan.
This story of
Savitri's unwavering love and dedication towards her husband is told during the
Vat Savitri Vrat to inspire and encourage married women to pray for the
well-being and longevity of their husbands. On this day, married women observe
a day-long fast, tie threads around a banyan tree (vat), and listen to or
recite the Vat Savitri Vrat Katha.
The Vat
Savitri Vrat is considered an important ritual for married women, symbolizing
their love, devotion, and commitment to their husbands. It is believed that by
observing this vrat with sincerity and devotion, women can seek blessings for
their husband's long and healthy lives.
